Introduction
MCA is a three year professional Master’s Degree in Computer Science & its Applications. The course is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the field of information technology. The MCA programme is dedicated to application development and thus has more emphasis on latest programming languages and tools to develop better and faster tools. State-of-the-art infrastructure, air conditioned computer labs with the latest advances in technology and comprehensive study material make this Department a class apart. The department is equipped with a dedicated library for quick reference.

Areas of Focus:

  • The MCA program focuses on providing a sound theoretical background as well as good practical exposure to students in the relevant areas.
  • The programmes aim at the understanding of the fundamentals of computing among the students so that they can compete in the present-day global situation. It is intended to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science.
  • As the IT and the software industry are dynamic and fast growing, the programme is designed and conducted keeping in view the requirements of industry. Students are trained in the fields of Systems Designing, Application Software Development, Enterprise Resource Planning, Computer Networks and Protocols, System Administration, Web Designing and Development, Database Administration, Parallel and Vector Processing, Data Mining and Warehousing, etc.

Programme Objectives:

The Programme of MCA covers various aspect of computational theory, programming, algorithm design, optimization, network and database management etc. As the IT and software industry are dynamic and fast growing, all programmes are designed keeping in view the requirements of industry. This Programme also places equal importance on the functional knowledge in various areas.

Seminar on “Information Security

Tech Craft Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications organized a Seminar on “Information Security” on 6th March 2017. The learned scholar Dr. Renu Dhir, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NIT, Jalandhar was the resource person. In the first technical session, she discussed important aspects of Information Security and then highlighted traditional and modern approaches used for security, different attacks and security goals in security services. In the second technical session, she focused on Modular arithmetic importance for Cryptography. The Seminar was very informative and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

Debate Competition

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Debate Competition” on 14th Feb 2017. .The Objective of the Competition was to check talent, confidence, knowledge and communication skills of participants. Akil Bashir and Harjeet Singh of B.Tech Civil scored first position. Gautam Aggarwal of B. T.ech CSE  & Gursharan Singh of MCA scored 2nd position. The winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates by Principal GIMET and HOD (CA).

Trip to Anandpur Sahib

Department of Computer Application organized one day excursion trip to Anandpur Sahib for MCA 2nd Year students on 10/2/17. The students visited many historical Gurdwaras and the Sikh heritage museum- Virast-e-Khalsa there.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Photography Competition” on 3rd Feb 2017 in the Institute premises in which the students showcased their remarkable talent in Photography.

Guest Lecture on “Software Agents and Multi-agent Systems”

Tech Craft Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications organized a Guest Lecture on “Software Agents and Multi-agent Systems” on 27th January 2017. The learned scholar Dr. Harjot kaur, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, GNDU, Regional Campus Gurdaspur was the resource person. In her lecture she started with the Introduction of Agent, Intelligent Agent, and classification of Agent followed by kind of Environment. She also discussed close relationship of Agent with Environment and further identified the challenges in it and then explored the future opportunities available. The talk was very informative and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

Guest Lecture on “Best Practices for Secure Computing”

Tech Craft Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications organized a Guest Lecture on “Best Practices for Secure Computing” on 19th January 2017. Dr. Harsh K Verma, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NIT, Jalandhar gave a mine of information to the students on this topic. In his well documented lecture, Dr. Verma discussed different things through which we can protect network computer. He also discussed the procedure to avoid threats in computer.

“Smart Grid & Iot"

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized one Day Seminar on topic “Smart Grid & Iot”. Dr. Anil Verma from Thapar University Patiala delivered a lecture on this occasion. He explained in details the concept of Smart Grid and its advantages. Further, the use of SCADA software system in preparing smart grids was also discussed. Additionally, in his discussion on the topic “Internet of things” the concept of communication between various objects (things) and architecture of IOT was highlighted. Moreover, various tools available in market based on IOT technologies were also explained. The students were shown the videos about the futuristic applications of IOT. Seminar was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

Dexterity 2k16

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized the “Dexterity 2k16”. The Objective was to check Computer related skills. More than 50 students participated in this event from different departments MCA, M. Tech and CSE/IT. Manvinder Singh of B.Tech CSE 3rd year scored first position. Harsimran Singh and Varun Bansal of B.Tech CSE 3rd year scored 2nd position. The winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates by Director GIMET and HOD (CA).

Industry visit

Department of Computer Applications Organized Industrial Visit on 22nd Oct 2016 to Pisoft Informatics Pvt. Ltd., Mohali for MCA students. The Objective of the visit was to create awareness among students about recent trends in the corporate world and to guide them for their Industrial Training, Internships, Placements and various Career Opportunities in industry.

Workshop on “Android App Development

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications of Global Institute of Management & Emerging Technologies, Amritsar organized Workshop on “Android App Development” on 24th October 2016 for faculty members and MCA students. Mr. Tawseef Bhat, IT Manager, Dream Tech Labs Jalandhar, gave practical demonstration on Android App Development. He also discussed the career opportunities with Android App Development in today’s smart world.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized One Day Seminar on “Security, Cyber attacks & Certification” on 6th Oct 2016. Dr. R. C Gangwar, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Beant College of Engineering & Technology, Gurdaspur spoke on “Security, Cyber attacks & Certification”. In his well documented lecture, Dr. Gangwar discussed Security Goals, Security Challenges, types of Cyber Attacks and Certification in Security.

Workshop on “Networking Challenges, Tools and Concepts” on 29th September 2016.

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications of Global Institute of Management & Emerging Technologies Amritsar, organized one Day Workshop on “Networking Challenges, Tools and Concepts” on 29th September 2016.
Technical Session was taken by Mr. Harish Chawla, Assistant Manager-IT, Pisoft Informatics Pvt. Ltd, Mohali. Mr. Chawla gave practical demonstration on setup network topologies in real environment, implementation and configuration of IPV4 and IPV6, local security policies with firewall settings, setup and configuration of FTP and DHCP servers. MCA 1st Year, 2nd Year and final year students attended the workshop.

National Seminar on “Real Life Data Mining

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized one Day National Seminar on “Real Life Data Mining” on 20th September 2016. First Technical Session was taken by Dr. Parteek Bhatia from Thapar University Patiala on “Machine Learning and Data Mining for Real World Applications”. Dr. Bhatia highlighted the concept of Machine Learning. Machine learning is now most widely used for mining of real world data, specially in Big Data analytics, analysis of Web click data, mining of medical records and in biology engineering. Dr. Bhatia illustrated supervised and unsupervised types of machine learning with many real world examples. Important data mining algorithms for clustering, classification and association mining of data and its implementation in popular data mining tool WEKA was also being discussed in this session.
Second Technical Session was taken by Dr. Kuljit Kaur from Department of Computer Application, GNDU, Amritsar on “Real life Data Mining Applications: Challenges & Solutions”. Dr. Kuljit discussed the potential of Data Mining technology to help answer a number of questions related to different applications domain.
Dr. Leena Jain presented the vote thanks and said that this seminar would augment the research orientation of the participants and also provide exposure to enhance their quality of research.

Guest Lecture on Natural Language Processing

Tech- Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized Guest Lecture on "Natural Language Processing" on 1st Feb 2016. Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Deptt. of Computer Sc. & Engineering Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, delivered a talk on "Natural Language Processing" to MCA and BCA Students of the college. Dr. Singh scholarly discussed about Natural Language Processing, its usage and applications. Dr. Singh also focused on how natural languages like Punjabi, Hindi, English etc. can be processed by computers and further used for specific applications. The talk was very informative and well appreciated by the audience.

Mr.Varun, an expert from IFC3 informed the participants about the different future challenges in the Cloud Computing technology. He gave hands on demonstration regarding how to make a Cloud, how to implement Cloud services and Models, VPN, and its installation on virtual box & VM Ware workstation.

International Conference on Communication, Information & Computing Technology (ICCICT-15)

A Two-Day "International Conference on Communication, Information and Computing Technology" (ICCICT-2015) was organized by the Department of Computer Applications and Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The Conference saw more than 250 quality research submission by research scholars of a large number of Technical Institutes and Universities from all over the country and abroad. Keynote speakers Dr. Deepak Garg- Professor Deptt. of Computer Science-Thapar University Patiala and and Dr. D. Dinakar from NIT Warangal delivered their talk on "Web Intelligence" and "Intensity Modulated Fiber Optic Loop Vibration Measurement" respectively. Eight sessions were held on Day-1 and the remaining 8 on Day-2. Many papers on hot contemporary research areas like Data Mining, Big Data, Mobile and Pervasive Computing, Cloud Computing, Genetic Algorithms were animatedly discussed and debated. New ideas, concepts and theories on various cutting edge technologies were heatedly discussed across various technical sessions.

Department of Computer Applications organized one Day National Seminar on "Query Processing in Distributed Database" on 3rd March 2015. The objective of the seminar was to raise awareness of the Faculty and Students regarding the concept, architecture and Query Processing in Distributed Database Environment by replicating Servers. The first Session of the seminar was taken by Dr. Rajinder Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, G.N.D.U Amritsar. Dr. Singh discussed "Distributed Database Query Processing using Soft Computing Techniques" in his lecture. Starting from the introduction of Distributed Databases System, he moved on to describe the Design of Distributed Databases. Dr. Singh also touched upon the Query Processing, Optimization, use of Heuristics and Joins vs Semi Joins Query. The Case Study about Distributed Database Sub Query Allocation using Genetic Algorithms was also discussed. Soft Skills Development

The soft skills' training is provided to all its students during the course of the MCA Program. This training also helps the students in career visioning and planning.

Communication Skills

The communication skill training is provided to all our students in our ultra-modern communication skills and multi media lab for this purpose. Effective communication skills are a critical element in student career and personal lives.

Aptitude Test

The Aptitude Test training is provided to all our students. All the areas normally covered in the aptitude tests are i.e., Quantitative Ability, Reasoning, and Verbal. Students get practice exercises and test papers for each test area followed by comprehensive tests on the pattern of the tests conducted by major companies.

Department of Computer Applications organized the "BRAINSTORMERS" on 25/03/15. Total 96 students participated in this event from different departments MCA, CSE and IT. The First winner team was Gaurav Kumar (CSE 8th SEM), Anoop Thapar (CSE 8th SEM) and Jaspreet Singh(CSE 8th SEM).

Debate Competition

Department of Computer Applications organized a debate competition on Feb 27th 2015 at the Auditorium in which a total of 4 teams participated with 6 students per team.

The winner team was from MCA 2A and C7 with students namely, Damanpreet Kaur, Sandeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Gurtej Singh, Opinderpal Singh and Aruna (C7).

The winning team was awarded with cash prize by the Director, GIMET.

Quiz Competition on General Awareness

Department of Computer Application was organized an event "Quiz Competition on General Awareness" on Feb 4, 2015 at Seminar Hall.

8 Teams participated from B.TECH (CS, IT), BCA and MCA classes from which team of B.TECH (C7) (Gautam Kataria, Amoljeet Singh Ahluwalia, Mandeep Kaur, Akshi, DivyaVasal and Anoop Thapar) won second prize and team of MCA (2A) (Mohit Sharma, Rahul Sharma, Manish Thakur, Keshav Pathania and Sukhmandeep Kaur) won a first prize.

Department of computer Application organized the “Online Technical Test” DEXTERITY-2014 on 7/10/14 . Total 114 students have registered for this event from different department MCA, CSE, IT, MBA-IT. The First winner was Ankush (BTECH-IT) scored 71% marks in online technical test. The second winner was Siddarth (MCA) scored 68% marks and others were Prabhdeep Kaur (MCA), Nancy(MCA), Rohit(BTECH- IT), Kamal(MCA), Shiwani(MCA), Jaspreet(MCA).

Dr. Anil Verma DCSE from Thapar University Patiala delivered an expert talk on the topic “Optimal and Effective use of social Networking Sites”. He initiated his talk by underlining the importance of Internet Media and then described the concept of social networks. Dr. verma also touched upon the SWOT Analysis of the social networking aspect. The functioning of the major social networking sites such as – Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Myspace were discussed. Dr. Verma highlighted about the use of these social networking sites for academic purpose. Further, the students were made aware about the idea of how to create and manage a social networking site. In the end, the basics of netiquettes and precautionary measures to be taken while surfing these sites were also discussed. The talk was very timely and well appreciated by the audience.

Dr. Lakhwinder Kaur DCSE from Punjabi University Patiala Patiala delivered a talk on “Digital Image Processing & Research Issues”. The expert focused on the different operations performed in digital image processing. The expert gave introduction of mathematical model of various digital image processing techniques. The expert also touched the prevalent research issues in the subject of digital image processing. She also focused on the applications of image processing in different areas like medical imaging, remote sensing, transmission and encoding, feature extraction etc. The main highlight of the talk was training imparted to participants on performing different image manipulations using MATLAB.

Dr. Amadeep Kaur DCSE from Punjabi University Patiala delivered a talk on “Image enhancement in spatial and frequency domain using MATLAB”. The expert focused on various image enhancement techniques to improve the quality of the image in spatial and frequency domain. She discussed how a particular technique enhance some features and degrade some other features in the given digital image. She also discussed that the image enhanced using spatial and frequency domain techniques can be further used for autonomous machine perception.

Dr. Amit Verma from Chandigarh University delivered a talk on “Face Detection and Face Recognition”. Dr. Verma focused on the process of face detection and face recognition. He gave introduction to the various stages of verification and validation in face detection and face recognition. He also focused on implementation of different stages of face recognition technology. The expert also touched the prevalent research issues related to face detection and face recognition. Dr. Verma also focused on the applications of Face detection and Face recognition in different areas like day care, banking, Voter verification, security etc.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Maninder Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Thapar University Patiala delivered a talk on “Network Security (ARP spoofing)”. Dr. Singh scholarly discusses on policies adopted by a network administrator to prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer network and network-accessible resources.

Dr. Kawaljeet Singh, Director,University Computer Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala delivered a talk on “Placement avenues with respect to intelligent web base e-governance applications”. He emphasised on developing simple real time applications that can be further used for the Economic Growth of a State and Society. He started the lecture by explaining the meaning of Governance. He depicted the mind-set of Public Sector employee, Bureaucracy and Politicians. He stressed upon that when monopoly will be substituted with multi-delivery channels, discretion will be accounted for, authority will be decentralised and accountability is guaranteed. He explained the progression of Citizen centric services in India. The approach “Think Big, Start Small and Scale Fast” is the ultimate philosophy to develop such applications. Very soon we will see all Government Services accessible to the common Citizen in his locality through common delivery outlets. The only things that are to be ensured while developing such applications is are to ensure efficiency, transparency and reliability of such services at affordable costs. He presented number of “best practices” in the field of e-Governance. He lauded the contribution of Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, IAS and Dr. Rajender, IAS in the fields of e-Governance. He demonstrated the projects undertaken by the undergraduates which are of immense contribution to the Society. Dr. Singh predicted that there is a trend towards more and more usage of Online Intelligent Applications for improved Governance. These intelligent applications are inherently multi-user, distributed, employ new era tools based on web technologies, data warehouses and data mining. He preached to the faculty members that small scale web applications related to different facets of e-Governance, carried out from top to bottom, with the help of students at College Level can prove to be a good platform to describe students, latest technologies and even earn considerably. He was of the opinion that all such developments require Aesthetic Sense, Innovative Minds, Team Work, Methodology, Knowledge of Scripting Languages and Database Technologies. Fortunately all these are amply available in Punjab.

Dr. Sharma scholarly discusses on internet-based cloud computing, exploring the characteristics, service models, and deployment models in use today, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with cloud computing.
